I have grown and loved pincushion flowers for ages, and this year Jennifer has found a better one.  (Really 3 better ones!)

The new varieties in 2018 are:
Scabiosa columbaria 'Flutter Deep Blue'
Scabiosa columbaria ' Flutter Pure White'
Scabiosa columbaria 'Flutter Rose Pink'

These varieties are short - about 12 " tall but will put out flowers from early Spring until very late Fall.  They grow in a neat little green mound about 12" wide.  If there is a bee anywhere around - it will visit this flower.  They prefer full to part sun, medium to dry soil conditions, and they grow very well in Cincinnati gardens.

The reason that the pincushion is a great perennial is because it can handle hot dry areas, and keep blooming until Thanksgiving.  After all of the other perennials have given up, the pincushion plant will keep putting up flowers.  Also, it is a bee favorite.

Because of its neat appearance and size it is a great plant for the front of a border or along a path.
